What is Hazard?

Iranian coasts, particularly in Guilan and Mazndaran provinces, have been interested for many people, who are going to travel to coastal areas for swimming during every summer; but there are some trouble that cause drowning and death more than 2 hundred and fifty professional swimmer as well as regular. The majority of mortality is related to waves and wave induced currents. These currents are so powerful that may drown even skillful swimmers.

Rip Currents

Most of costal currents are made by waves and their breaking. The waves destabilize and break in a specific depth. Due to wave breaking, parallel and cross shore currents are being formed in the coasts. Shore parallel encounter with each other in specific intervals and return to the sea with a considerable speed. These returning streams which may also be created by other mechanisms are called rip currents and created in shallow coastal waters.

 

 

Prediction of Rip Currents

Although rip currents generation are affected by wave incident and surf zone morphology but they happened in the nearly fixed area that we called them rip channels. The positions of these channels can be find from some numerical simulation. The modelers try to simulate rip currents by running numerical models under several scenarios according to most frequencies wave characteristics.

 

 

 
 
 

 

 

 

How to Recognize Rip Currents?

Rip currents could be formed everywhere along the coast but its speed depends on wave features, the angle of hitting wave to the coast and bottom slope of the coast. Therefore swimmers should familiarize with dangerous conditions which may be created by waves, particularly by rip currents. We may hardly observe this stream through going on a sand hill which is two meters high or a cottage or a car.

Despite trying to find the subsea merged hills, one can noticed into the coastline and sea surface futures: the coastline in the rip zone is usually in arced shape with length of less than 250 meter. Because of water depth, waves break in both sides of rip channel where the hills formed. Additionally, the water is more turbid and the sea surface is smooth in the rip channels.

 

 Necessary Instructions for Safe Swimming in the Caspian Sea

            If you have not learned swimming completely, never swim in places deeper than your height.

            In the Caspian Coast (particularly from Astara to Neka),  usually there are one or several sandy hills. If you put your feet on a sandy hill, you may perceive that it is shallow but the depth suddenly increases. Therefore you should be careful about sudden change in water depth so that you do not face with troubles.

            If you do not trust your body power for swimming in a wavy sea and floating yourself on the wave, do not enter the sea and do not try your power here.

            If you are exposed to rip currents, firstly remain calm and measure your position in the sea, then decide.

            If you are exposing to rip currents, never challenge them and do not swim against the current towards the coast. Be calm and accompany with the rip. Hold yourself several minutes on the water or swim along the coast in order to get out of rip currents. Notice that the current weakens by moving towards the sea, then swim towards the coast in a diagonal way.

            If the next wave approach you during swimming, take breath several seconds and go one meter under water so that you be protected against wave.

            The area in which waves are broken is not suitable for swimming. The sea is usually calmer outside the area towards sea. Therefore if a swimmer can hold her/him on the water, she will be protected against the rip currents.

Of course, we do not recommend swimmers to distance very much from the coast.

            If you hold yourself floating with rip currents and enter outside wave breaking area, firstly take breath and request for help, then swim along the coast so that you enter a calmer area.

            If you guess that no one will help you and you have to reach the coast using your ability, swim towards the coast accompanying the coming wave. Of course, go under water when waves are coming. Notice that you may go towards the sea with rip currents and return to the coast with the coming wave. The important point is that you should not float yourself on the great wave. So take breath and approach the coast firstly by swimming along the coast and then by diagonal swimming.
