Fifth Session of the Governing Board of RCOWA - 14 February 2022

The Fifth session of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Category 2 Regional Education and Research Centre on Oceanography for West Asia (RCOWA) was held virtually on Monday, 14 February 2022.

The meeting was attended by the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UNESCO, Executive Secretary of the IOC-UNESCO, Chair of RCOWA Governing Board, UNESCO Representative, members of the Governing Board from India, Iraq, Oman, Pakistan as well as the observers from the Iranian National Commission to UNESCO and the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office.

The meeting was opened by the welcome remarks of Dr. Behrooz Abtahi, the Chair of RCOWA Governing Board. In the opening, he appreciated the IOC-UNESCO, Iranian Delegation to UNESCO, Iranian National Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office for their supports in RCOWA activities as well as in renewal process of RCOWA Agreement.

Then, H.E. Dr. Ahmad Paktachi, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Islamic Republic of Iran to UNESCO, presented his opening remarks and noted the importance of the Oceanography for the region and the role of RCOWA in transferring the oceanography knowledge in the region.

The next speaker, Dr. Vladimir Ryabinin, the Executive Secretary of the IOC-UNESCO, presented his opening remarks. He expressed his satisfaction from the activities of RCOWA during the last years and he noted that the evaluation of UNESCO from RCOWA activities for renewal of the Agreement had a positive results. He mentioned the Agreement of the establishment of this regional center was extended by the end of 2022 by UNESCO to complete the final stages and submitting the reports to the UNESCO Executive Board.

After the opening, a report on the RCOWA activities in 2021 was presented by the chairman of the meeting, Dr. Behrooz Abtahi.

Following his report, Ms. Fahimeh Foroughi, the Executive Director and Head of International Cooperation of RCOWA, briefly reported a history of the center and the UNESCO's evaluation process in 2021 for the renewal of the RCOWA Agreement.  Then, Mr. Justin Ahananzo, the UNESCO Representative on the Governing Board presented a report on the process and progress of evaluating of the center.

Members of the Governing Board from Pakistan, Oman, India and Iraq also appreciated the RCOWA activities and expressed their interest in cooperation with RCOWA as before. The Chair appreciated the supports of the Governing Board Members.

Also, the Executive Secretary of the IOC-UNESCO called for more cooperation between RCOWA in Iran and the UNESCO Category 2 International Training Centre on Operational Oceanography in India. The Directors of the two centers welcomed the idea of organizing joint events in the next years.

At the end of the meeting, proposed plans for 2022 were presented.
